Pest control around Great Falls

Pest control for ranch and small-town homes, from one person.

I'm Janie Prescott. I take care of mice, ants, wasps and the fall bugs in houses within about an hour of Great Falls. If a job isn't mine to do, I say so and tell you who to call.

Before you call

What I do, and what I don't

So nobody waits on a phone call to find out. If your job is in the right-hand column, I'll tell you who to ask.

The photo text

How a text turns into a visit

Most of what people find in the house isn't a job. Sending a photo first saves a trip for both of us.

  1. 01

    You text a photo

Send it to (406) 555-0106 and say where you saw it and since when. A phone photo is fine.

  2. 02

I tell you what it is

I read texts at the end of each field day, so you hear that night or the next morning, with what it does and whether it's mine to treat. Plenty of them need nothing from you, and you'll hear that too.

  3. 03

    We pick a day

If it's a job for me, I book the next run toward you. Tell me about gates, dogs and how far past the pavement you are.

  4. 04

    I look, then I explain

I walk the outside and the spots you've seen, tell you what I found and what I'd do, and give you a written quote before I start. You say yes or no.

Mice come in with the first hard frost

A gap the size of a dime is a door

By the time you hear mice in the wall, they've been in for a while. So I look for the way in first: the gaps around pipes, the garage door seal, the bottom edge of the siding. I seal what I can reach with steel mesh, set traps, and tell you about the rest. Bait alone doesn't close the door.

  • I look at the outside first, then the inside

  • Steel mesh, not foam alone, in the gaps I can reach

  • I tell you what I couldn't reach, in writing

A year out here

What shows up when

A rough guide for this part of Montana. The weather moves every date by a few weeks.

  • Ants in the house

Carpenter and field ants wake up in the first warm weeks.

    Apr to Jul

  • Miller moths

Mostly nothing to treat. Text a photo and I'll tell you.

    May to Jun

  • Wasps and yellowjackets

Nests are small in June and large by late summer.

    Jun to Sep

  • Box elder bugs

They gather on sunny walls before they come inside.

    Sep to Oct

  • Cluster flies

They come in to spend the winter in the walls and attic.

    Sep to Nov

  • Mice and rats

They move into houses, shops and sheds as it gets cold.

    Sep to Mar

Dates shift with the weather. If you see something out of season, text me.

How far I drive

About an hour from Great Falls, and not much farther

I drive up to roughly 60 miles from Great Falls. A ranch road or a county gravel road is fine. Past that, I would rather send you to someone closer than leave you waiting on a two-hour drive.

  • Cascade County: Great Falls, Black Eagle, Sun River, Vaughn, Belt, Cascade, Ulm, Simms, Fort Shaw · Closest to me. Most visits happen within the week.
  • Teton County: Fairfield, Choteau · I plan one run a week up this way, so a visit may wait for it.
  • Chouteau County: Fort Benton · Same: one run a week, usually the same day as Fort Shaw.
  • Pondera County: Conrad · At the edge of my drive. Text first and I'll say.

Past about 60 miles from Great Falls (Havre, Lewistown and the Hi-Line) I say no and tell you who to try nearer to you.

Who comes to your door

One person, and sometimes two

This is the whole company.

  • Janie Prescott

    Owner and licensed applicator

I own Sun River Pest Service and do most of the visits myself. I'll tell you if the answer is to do nothing.

  • Bart Elliott

    Technician, spring and fall

Bart rides along on the busy weeks, when there are more calls than one person can take.

From people I've worked for

What they wrote after

“I sent a picture of the thing on the porch and she wrote back that night that it was nothing to treat. That saved me a trip out here.”

Alvina H.Fairfield

“Mice kept coming into the shop every November. She found the gap under the overhead door and sealed it, and told me straight which two spots she couldn't reach.”

Ora K.Sun River

“She said the horses and the hen house weren't hers to treat and told me who to ask. I trusted her more for saying so.”

Questions

Quick answers

How much does it cost?

It depends on the pest, the size of the house and outbuildings, how many visits it takes and how far I drive. I write the quote after I have looked, before I start, and you say yes or no. I don't quote a price from a photo.

Do I need to be home?

For the first visit, yes, or someone who knows where you saw it. After that, I can work outside while you're away if you tell me about gates, dogs and where to park.

Is it okay around my kids, pets and livestock?

I follow the product label every time, and I tell you where to keep children, dogs, cats and animals out and for how long. If you keep chickens, horses or a garden near the house, say so when you text and I will plan around them. Ask and I will name every product I use.

How long until I see a difference?

It varies. Ants usually slow within a couple of weeks, and mice depend on how many ways in there are. I tell you what to expect at the visit instead of promising a date.

What if they come back?

Text me. If the same pest comes back in the same place within 60 days of a visit, I come and look at no extra charge. A new pest or a new spot is a new visit, and a gap I could not reach is not covered.

Do you have a contract or plan?

No contract. Most people book one visit, and some book a spring check and a fall check. You can stop any time.

Send a photo or a note

Text is fastest. The form works too, and I will write back from the same number.
